This seminar combines four online sessions with three days of in-person learning at Poynter in St. Petersburg, Florida. We are exploring options to also livestream these sessions for participants who choose not to travel.

TV Power Reporting is one of Poynter’s signature seminars, and our 2022 academy will once again be led by senior faculty for broadcast and online, Al Tompkins. For more than 25 years, TV reporters, photojournalists, visual journalists and multimedia journalists have relied on Poynter to build their reporting, writing and ethical decision-making skills.

Our visiting faculty in 2022 include one of the nation’s most celebrated investigative reporters, the only NPPA Photographer of the Year who is also the Editor of the Year and a CNN correspondent who, for hours, covered protests in the streets of Minneapolis live on international television. You will hear from one of journalism’s most respected voices on media ethics and a Peabody and Murrow-winning journalist who shoots, writes and edits all of his own investigative stories.

During this hybrid online and in-person training, you will have the chance to get individual feedback on your work, hone your critical thinking and learn to find the stories that others miss. When you’re done, you’ll have a toolkit full of practical skills and a roadmap to move your career ahead. Here’s what one attendee said:

I think that my attending this workshop will help my newsroom as a whole. For one thing, it gives me a bit more gravitas. Everyone was eager to hear what I’d learned, and when I suggested to my boss a different way of handling a story (by trying to find people affected by the issue instead of just getting a quote from an official), he agreed, even though it will take longer. This hybrid seminar will unfold over four weeks, beginning Tuesday, April 5, 2022. There will be four online sessions — April 5, 12, 26 and 28 — and one in-person workshop April 21-23. Each online session starts at noon Eastern time and will last 60-90 minutes.

Tuesday, April 5 (online) — Part 1: Powerful Writing
Writing to video, the power of natural sound, spotting subjective soundbites, the shape of the story, writing powerful leads, developing interesting characters and finding tight focus. (Al Tompkins, Poynter)

Tuesday, April 12 (online) — Thinking Visually
What a photojournalist wants every reporter to understand about storytelling (Chad Nelson, KARE11)

Thursday, April 21 (in-person at Poynter in St. Petersburg)

TV reporters and VJ/MMJ/backpack journalists for television, as well as college educators and international journalists, should apply. This seminar also is perfect for photojournalists who want to learn to write and report.

We strongly encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply. If you are a member of AAJA, NABJ, NAHJ, NAJA or NLGJA, 50% tuition scholarships are available, thanks to CNN. We want applicants to commit to attending all sessions when we present them live. Knowing that news sometimes gets in the way of learning, we record each session if you miss one or you want to review what you learned in the live session.

The process to apply is straightforward and simple. When you apply, you will be required to indicate if you will join us in St. Pete for the in-person session. For people who choose not to travel, we will offer all of the sessions that we teach virtually but we strongly urge all who can attend in person to do so. Poynter has reserved a block of hotel rooms in St. Petersburg at a reduced room rate. We provide lunch for participants in our in-person sessions.

No letter of recommendation or reference is required. Please be prepared to answer questions about your professional experience, areas of interest and basic demographic information. We will also include a health screening form in the application to help us plan a safe event.

Cost

The cost is $499, which includes tuition for the four-week seminar and coaching. 

Poynter is able to offer this seminar at the low tuition price because of the financial support of CNN. Members of AAJA, NABJ, NAHJ, NAJA and NLGJA are eligible for a 50% tuition scholarship.
